Lwena Quartz: Cascading Beauty from Remote Congo
These gorgeous quartz crystals hail from Lwena (also known as Luena), a remote area in the Democratic Republic of the Congo near the Zambian border. Renowned for their stunning cascading habit, smaller crystals grow in delicate layers around the bases and down the sides of the main points, creating intricate, almost artichoke-like clusters.
Colors range from optic-clear white to pale yellow, with many showing gentle smoky tones and distinctive phantoms inside the crystals. While the region was once famous for natural citrine (smoky-yellow to honey hues), true citrine has become increasingly rare - most current material leans toward clear or smoky quartz from the same deposits.
Mining here is challenging: the area is highly remote, with rough access and seasonal flooding during the summer rains, making consistent supply difficult and sporadic. As a result, these specimens are harder to source and tend to be on the pricier side - but they sell out incredibly fast once they arrive!
At TopRocks, we receive shipments of these beautiful cascading clusters every so often, featuring high-clarity pieces that are mostly intact (minor regional damage is typical). They're perfect for collectors, displays, or wholesale - adding a unique, natural elegance to any inventory.
