PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Cretaceous Ammonite Fossil
Malagasy Cretaceous Ammonite, were free-swimming marine cephalopods that flourished for over 300 million years before their extinction at the close of the Cretaceous period, approximately 66 million years ago. These Madagascan specimens are preserved in Calcite within a Limestone matrix, and are renowned for their distinctive logarithmic spiral form and intricate suture patterns formed where internal chamber walls met the outer shell. Shell material is typically replaced by Calcite during fossilisation, producing warm creams, browns, and occasionally pyritised golden tones depending on the deposit. Madagascar's western sedimentary basins are among the most prolific Ammonite localities in the world, consistently producing well-preserved specimens across a range of sizes.
