Azurite: Deep Blue Treasures from Select African PocketsAzurite, the striking deep azure-blue copper carbonate mineral, is always a highlight in our collections - its rich color and varied forms make it a favorite among collectors and lapidary artists.
Madagascar Azurite is particularly rare, but every so often we manage to secure a pocket of exceptional drusy material: sparkling crystalline vugs with intense blue sparkle and glittering surfaces that catch the light beautifully.
From the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), we've sourced two distinct types over the years: stunning botryoidal forms that resemble flowers or rounded balls, and flatter crystalline plates with sharp, tabular crystals. We've acquired 6 or 7 such pockets historically, though long gaps ("blue droughts") between finds are common due to the remote and challenging mining conditions.
Very occasionally, we come across single Tsumeb Azurite pieces (from Namibia's legendary Tsumeb mine) in old collections - these classic specimens command higher prices for their historical significance and quality.
At TopRocks, Azurite arrives sporadically, often in limited quantities that move quickly. Current offerings lean toward Congo material, including polished freeforms and associated pieces with malachite for vibrant color contrasts.
