PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Western Cape Prehnite
Prehnite from the Western Cape, South Africa, particularly from deposits like Beaufort West and the Karoo dolerites near Cradock, is renowned for its translucent, jelly-green to yellowish-green hue and distinctive botryoidal or cogwheel-shaped formations. This calcium aluminum silicate mineral, with a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5, was first discovered in the region by Colonel Hendrik von Prehn in the 18th century, making it the first mineral named after a person. Typically forming in cavities of volcanic rocks alongside zeolites, it exhibits a vitreous to pearly luster and is often translucent, occasionally featuring black tourmaline inclusions. Ideal for cabochons, carvings, or collectors’ specimens, Western Cape Prehnite is valued for its affordability compared to Australian varieties and its suitability for jewelry or display, though it requires care to avoid scratches.
