PRODUCT INFORMATION

General Description

Madagascar is well known for its petrified wood products. The region produces everything from XXXL slices to gallets / palm stones, pyramids or prisms. However, majority of material is made into slices, and only a fraction gets made into other produce types. Petrified wood can be exceptionally heavy for its size, and quite hard to cut. The wood colours are highly diverse and generally worked to best expose the growth ring patterns. A lot of the regional material is Triassic in age, botanically affiliated to the genus Podocarpus.

Petrifaction or petrification is the process by which organic material becomes a fossil through the replacement of the original material and the filling of the original pore spaces with minerals. Petrified wood typifies this process, but all organisms, from bacteria to vertebrates, can become petrified. Price is grade dependant. Item/s are as shown.
