While the material can potentially be pink Dolomite, it is frequently challenging to distinguish between the Calcite and Dolomite hosts, especially in microcrystalline forms.

Salrose generally describes the "pink stuff" from Copper-bearing deposits in Southern and Central Africa. Specimens may sometimes show associations with Malachite or other copper-based minerals, although this is not always the case.
