Along the margins of the Zomba Plateau in Malawi, a remarkable variety of minerals can be found, each contributing to the region's rich geological tapestry. The primary matrix in this area is Orthoclase, within which a diverse array of minerals is present, including Smokey Quartz, Aegirine, and Zircon.

Smokey Quartz from Zomba ranges from dark gemmy varieties to morion and pitch-black forms. These specimens often feature intriguing Aegirine inclusions, though Riebeckite and Rutile inclusions are less common. Recent discoveries have revealed pockets containing Green Chlorite inclusions or phantoms, adding to the region's mineralogical allure.

Aegirine in Zomba occurs as either black, shiny single crystals or green, fibrous forms, with complex clusters and classic terminations being more frequent than acicular ones. Although Zomba specimens may not always exhibit conventional beauty, they are compelling due to their complexity and the unique geological processes they represent. Many specimens from this region also display self-healing characteristics, making them particularly prized among collectors.
