Smokey Fluorite: The Mineral That Named Fluorescence
Smokey Fluorite is a dark purple-brown variety of Fluorite (CaF₂) found in hydrothermal veins, where mineral-rich fluids cooled slowly inside rock fractures over millions of years. Known for its distinctive cubic crystal clusters set against a cream Calcite or Dolomite matrix, this naturally smoky coloration comes from trace impurities and radiation exposure within the earth. What makes these specimens truly exceptional is their vivid green fluorescence under UV light a property so characteristic of this mineral that it gave the scientific phenomenon of fluorescence its very name. Highly sought after by collectors for both their striking natural form and their dramatic UV response, Smokey Fluorite specimens are best appreciated in their raw, untreated state where the full depth of their crystal structure and colour zoning can be seen.
