PRODUCT INFORMATION

General Description

Silky Malachite, renowned for its distinctive rosette or fan-like crystalline formations, captivates with its chatoyant and sparkling appearance. Originating from Kasompe, Congo, this region produces some of the finest silky specimens in the world, making them highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Malachite, a green Copper Carbonate Hydroxide mineral with the chemical composition Cu2(CO3)(OH)2, holds a rich history as one of the earliest ores used to extract Copper metal. Our specimens are meticulously sourced from the Congo, where extensive mining operations focus on its copper content, making specimen-grade material a rare find. Initially referred to as "Molochitus" by Pliny the Elder in 79 CE, the revised spelling "Malachite" gained widespread adoption by 1661. Malachite exhibits a diverse range of habits, including botryoidal, silky, and stalactite-like forms. The weight-to-size ratio of specimens varies greatly depending on the density of the material, with highly dense banded or flower-patterned material being ideal for cutting. While botryoidal specimens are commonly available, silky or fibrous varieties are more challenging to obtain. Stalactite specimens, the rarest and most collectible, command particular admiration for their unique beauty. Price is grade dependant. Items are as shown.
