Podocarpus and the Podocarpaceae were endemic to the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana. Gondwana broke up into Africa, South America, India, Australia-New Guinea, New Zealand, and Madagascar between 105 and 45 million years ago.

Podocarpus is a characteristic tree of the Antarctic flora, which originated in the cool, moist climate of southern Gondwana.

In geology, petrifaction or petrification is the process by which organic material becomes a fossil through the replacement of the original material and the filling of the original pore spaces with minerals. Petrified wood typifies this process, but all organisms, from bacteria to vertebrates, can become petrified.
