General Description
Gabbro is a phaneritic, mafic intrusive igneous rock formed from the slow cooling of magnesium-rich and iron-rich magma into a holocrystalline mass deep beneath the Earth's surface. Slow-cooling, coarse-grained gabbro is chemically equivalent to rapid-cooling, fine-grained basalt. Gabbro is also known as Merlinite a name given to this "marble" by Robert Simmons. This is a very attractive and largely inexpensive material which has a black matrix with grey to white specular inclusions, which produces a stunning range of features, patterns and contrast.
