The deposits are mined by individual miners who simply own a small piece of land which scatters the areas of the deposit. The material is not mined on a commercial level but rather you have hundreds of individuals mining their own small area, often in their back gardens. The most sought after material is dark Amethyst, but every other colour is also mined and far more regularly. Only 1% of the deposits yield Amethyst with the balancing producing white, ametrine, golden healer limonite, or variable habits in a range of mixed colours. Smokey material does occur from time to time but is extremely rare. Spirit Quartz is one of South Africa's main exports in terms of mineral specimens. Material often goes through extensive cleaning before it comes onto the open market as the majority is encrusted in Iron prior to the cleaning process. We have numerous suppliers of the material and all material is inspected graded and priced accordingly. A grade material is generally best for high end collectors and pricing is generally exceptionally high. However, we try to focus on commercial grade material for retail sector. These captivating crystals often feature Lepidocrocite specular or needle-like inclusions, along with skeletal, window, and sceptre features, enhancing their allure. In the early days, the first few batches of material we received exhibited a relatively high percentage of damage. However, our regional efforts have made a significant impact, as we've worked closely with miners to instil greater care in their extraction methods, thereby reducing the frequency of damage. Moreover, the average size of these remarkable crystals has increased since our initial acquisitions, with specimens between 40 to 80mm becoming more prevalent. The crystals from this region often arrive stained or coated with complex patinas, necessitating specialized cleaning methods to reveal their true beauty. Chiredzi's presence in the gemstone world dates back to late 2018 and early 2019, with limited material available until recently. At Toprock, we have devoted substantial resources and manpower to explore the region, seeking the source and origins of this exceptional material. As a result, we now directly source from a diverse range of regional deposits spanning from Chiredzi to Shangani. Notably, Chiredzi was initially named for deposits in Zimbabwe, but more gemmy material has since been reported from Zambia, with recent deposits emerging in Mozambique. Discover the enigmatic beauty of Chiredzi's amethyst Smokey quartz crystals, a testament to nature's artistry and the meticulous efforts invested to bring them to the world. Price is grade dependant. Originating from the Jurassic to Cretaceous periods 66 - 200 million years ago, these fossils showcase a smooth or faintly striated surface, with concentric growth rings revealing a lifespan of about four years. Formed from low-Mg Calcite, the rostrum served as a counterbalance for the squid like creature’s buoyant phragmocone, aiding its agility in ancient oceans. Each fossil’s unique texture and earthy tones make it a great piece for collectors and a valuable tool for geologists or university's studying ancient marine environments.

PRODUCT MINERALS
Calcite

PRODUCT FEATURES
Fossil, Bullet, Striated, Conical, Fluorescent

PRODUCT COLOUR
Grey, White, Brown

MOHS HARDNESS SCALE
3 to 5

PRODUCT DATA
Locality = Maintirano, Madagascar
Grade = Good to A Grade
Size = 20 - 68 mm

A NOTE FROM NICK
Small Rough and terminated Zimbabwe Schorl Black Tourmaline single crystals and semi crystals.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Zimbabwean Black Tourmaline

Zimbabwean Black Schorl Tourmaline specimen, some showcasing the iconic "Mercedes star" termination and some stunning quartz matrix specimens. These specimens display a mesmerizing palette, with Chrysocolla’s soft turquoise to teal hues forming smooth, botryoidal layers or crusts, interwoven with the lush, forest-green banding of Malachite, and accented by the rare, vivid blue of Shattuckite, which often appears in fibrous or crystalline clusters. The interplay of these copper based minerals, Chrysocolla (a hydrous copper silicate), Malachite (a copper carbonate), and Shattuckite (another copper silicate), creates a dynamic contrast of textures and colors, ranging from silky and matte to glossy and striated.

PRODUCT MINERALS
Copper Silicate Hydroxide

PRODUCT COLOUR
Blue, Turquoise, Green

MOHS HARDNESS SCALE
2.5 to 3.5

PRODUCT DATA
Locality = Koakoveld, Namibia
Grade = Medium to Very Good Grade
Size = 45 - 107 mm
