The region produces everything from XXXL slices to gallets / palm stones, pyramids or prisms. However, majority of material is made into slices, and only a fraction gets made into other produce types. Petrified wood can be exceptionally heavy for its size, and quite hard to cut. The wood colours are highly diverse and generally worked to best expose the growth ring patterns. A lot of the regional material is Triassic in age, botanically affiliated to the genus Podocarpus.

Petrifaction or petrification is the process by which organic material becomes a fossil through the replacement of the original material and the filling of the original pore spaces with minerals. Petrified wood typifies this process, but all organisms, from bacteria to vertebrates, can become petrified. Price is grade dependant. He brought it back to us, showcasing its solid structure, free from cracks, displaying a captivating primordial green hue adorned with striking black ring patterns. Upon examination, it was recognized and confirmed as Stromatolite fossil stone. Comparable to the 2.3 billion-year-old Stromatolites found in South Africa, the Malagasy specimens are approximately 60 to 80 million years old, originating from the era when the African continent underwent its separation. Our South African Stromatolites are among the oldest known in the world. Stromatolites represent ancient bacterial formations, one of the earliest life forms on Earth. We've been crafting polished products from this stone since its discovery. However, in Madagascar, this material is often marketed as Kambamba/Kombamba Jasper. Initially sourced from Kombambi Bay, the Malagasy lapidary community was unaware it was Stromatolite (Nick, our fossil enthusiast, identified it). Both names, Stromatolite and Kambamba Jasper, are accurate descriptors for this material. There have been some online debates comparing it to Ocean Jasper, but they are distinctly different. Ocean Jasper has volcanic origins and is a chalcedony filled coral reef formation, while Stromatolite showcases typical cyanobacteria dome structures within a green matrix of pyroxene/aegirine/arfvedsonite. The name "Septarian" originates from the word "Septaria," typically associated with concretions that exhibit internal cavities or cracks. This extraordinary mineral traces its origins back 50 to 70 million years ago, during Earth's Cretaceous Period, in a fascinating geological tale. At that time, an abundance of marine life was irresistibly drawn to the molten sediment produced by massive volcanic eruptions. As these prehistoric sea creatures perished, their chemical composition became integrated into the surrounding sedimentary rock, gradually forming the unique nodules we admire today. As global oceans receded, the water contained within these concretions evaporated, giving rise to extensive internal cracks. Over time, the chemicals within the remnants of these ancient sea creatures crystallized, forming distinctive Aragonite "crusts" and drusy Calcite crystals, a process that accounts for the striking patterns found within Septarian Nodules. Most Septarian Nodules originate from regions such as Utah or Madagascar, which experienced similar geological conditions during that ancient period. These nodules boast an array of delightful colours and intricate patterns that add to their allure. They are classically polished into egg-shaped formats, aptly earning them the name "Dragon Eggs," a fitting designation due to their crystalline exposures. Other polished forms, such as balls, hearts, and various lines, also often reveal frequent crystalline areas, further enhancing their beauty. Its lithified nature gives it substantial weight and an exceptional polish, resulting in a high-shine finish. Price is grade dependant. It comes from Kombambi Bay in Madagascar and the Malagasy lapidary folks had no clue it was Stromatolite, (Nick is a fossil nut) so it has been sold as Kambamba Jasper for years, but both names are perfectly correct. I have seen controversial articles on it on the net, comparing it to Ocean Jasper (which is a completely different material that is of volcanic origins and is a chalcedony filled coral reef formation. Clearly visible if you have seen all of the various layers, rough material and have been to the regions it comes from, which we have) In its natural form in shows the typical Stromatolite cyanobacteria dome structure wit the typical ring patterns in pyroxene/aegirine/arfvedsonite green matrix. These nodules boast an array of delightful colors and intricate patterns that add to their allure. They are classically polished into egg-shaped formats, aptly earning them the name "Dragon Eggs," a fitting designation due to their crystalline exposures. Other polished forms, such as balls, hearts, and various lines, also often reveal frequent crystalline areas, further enhancing their beauty. Upgrade any space with some ancient petrified wood! Madagascar is well known for its petrified wood products.

Product Data

Locality = Madagascar
Grade = Very Good Grade
Size = 800 x 800 x 40 mm

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2066/6451/files/DSC_0781_a7135a49-3e1c-4ccd-a080-c867236140b2.jpg?v=1766420543
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2066/6451/collections/DSC_0303_8328e821-d838-43dc-93c3-bdd01be9a0b4.jpg?v=1765864745
